Regional NHS Interstitial Lung Disease Service

University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation Trust is commissioned by NHS England to host a regional NHS Interstital Lung Disease (ILD) Service for patients with lung fibrosis and inflammation.  Patients with progressive lung fibrosis, including those with an occupational cause such as asbestosis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis, can access immunosuppressive and antifibrotic medications when appropriate.  Assessment, holistic management and drug monitoring is then taken on by the multi-disciplinary team, some of whom also work within occupational lung disease service as well.   Patients can usually have their treatment at any of the major UHB hospital sites, inluding Birmingham Chest Clinic.  Meet the multi-disciplinary team below:

Sr. Emma Briggs

 

Emma is the lead specialist nurse with many years' experience in managing patients with ILDs and lung fibrosis; she works across Good Hope and Heartlands Hospitals and Birmingham Chest Clinic. 

Claire Walker is an ILD specialist physiotherapist who is also a lead for the Respiratory Physiotherapy Outpatient and Rehabilitation services at the Trust. She holds a postgraduate certificate in respiratory medicine and has a keen passion for ILD care.  Her current role includes physiotherapy provision in the ILD clinic and within the community ILD MDT.  She also takes part in the ILD Rapid Access Clinic, the focus of which is admission avoidance and facilitation of hospital discharge for patients with ILD.

She is a certified Bradcliff practitioner and has an interest in breathing pattern disorders, cough and breathlessness management and exercise prescription.
